A business must make a surplus if it is to survive, just as we have to breathe in order to live.

But can we jump to the conclusion that the purpose of life is to breathe or that the purpose of being in business is to make profits?

Business life in context

Willis Harman said of business and business people:

Leaders in world business are the first true planetary citizens. They have worldwide capability and responsibility.

Their decisions affect not just economies, but societies and the world problems of poverty, environment, and security.

World business will be a key actor in the ultimate resolution of the macro-problem.

The business corporation is far more flexible and adaptive than the bureaucratic structures of government.

This places a grave responsibility on these economic agents in society; a responsibility that is yet to be universally accepted by the business community.

Everything comes from nature.

Without the creative forces and assets of nature everything stops.

One world or none -- Visions of viable world community

Servant Nation

Society establishes structures within which we find freedom and choice that would not be possible in "the state of nature".

Economics seeks to understand how we make a living as a species among other species.

By using the natural resources as free inputs, human labour creates wealth (goods and services) that makes civilised living possible.

Without customers, a business has no purpose;

Without society, business and economics has no purpose

Without the quality of being humane, society is but a jungle

Without respect for nature, humanity cannot last long as a viable species
